Riga has a beautiful old town, with Art Nouveau buildings and cobbled streets that are made for getting lost in without a map. It's worth wandering the Old Town and having a drink in its quiet squares.
The Central Market is housed in former Zeppelin hangars and is a must-visit for sampling local produce and traditional food. January is cold, so take a good walk along the Baltic coast or head to Jūrmala, the nearby seaside resort that has a special charm in winter.
