Riga's old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with Art Nouveau buildings that deserve a relaxed walk. You can also visit the Central Market, housed in former Zeppelin hangars, or enjoy a good coffee and local life on the cobbled streets of the centre.
If you fancy getting out of the city, Jūrmala, Riga's beach resort, is about 40 minutes away by train. In winter it has a special charm, with seaside walks and wooden villages. Just pack warm clothes, because January and February can be quite cold.
