Lufthansa connects Munich and Sofia with direct flights at tight prices. The average sits around €161 for return fares, so you have good options in the short term. Book now if you spot a €160 ticket, it doesn't come up often.
Price and when to book
The lowest recorded price is €160 return, though most searches fall between €160 and €198. The sooner you reserve, the better: these fares are spotty. Don't wait until the last minute if you see something in the €160–€165 range. Prices climb as dates approach and during holidays.
Airline and stopovers
Lufthansa operates this route nonstop from Munich to Sofia. No stops or connections: board, fly, land. Sample outbound departs at 20:05, arrives next day. The return is nonstop as well. The comfort of a journey without connections makes up for the fare.
Best time to travel
Sofia shines in spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October): pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds. Bulgarian winter is cold but the city has charm. Skip July–August if you can't handle the heat. Book 4–6 weeks ahead for better prices in shoulder season.
What to do when you arrive
Sofia is compact and walkable. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Sofia Metropolitan Cathedral and Rila Monastery (day trip) are must-sees. Eat at traditional tavernas in the old town, try banitsa and rakia. The metro is fast and cheap to get around. Three days cover the essentials.
